Jane's drawings are part of an on-going visual exploration of the intensity of social connection in today's social media driven society. Social connections are typically made through a mix of controlled social introduction (workplace/chat rooms/prior connection etc) and random chance; in replication of this Jane has turned to a rules and random methodology.
ThIs series of exploratory works are based on sociological and anthropological studies of social groupings and are an on-going project.
"I
am interested in the pure number of connections and time we typically spend connecting on social media and the consequent impact on mental health, particularly in the younger age bracket. I wanted to explore the complexity of the number of connections -what this looked like visually and to compare how this develops over time. This is a project that is on-going and still under exploration.
An unexpected outcome of these drawings are the 3D nature of these work on a flat surface - for me the 'architecture' of connection has become as interesting as the intent behind the project."
